BUSAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

FOCUS-on-FilmFestivalLife

Today we spoke to Pak Dosin, Programmer of World Cinema at the

18th BUSAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

DEADLINE  • 31 July 2013

Pak Dosin, Programmer, Busan International Film Festival

There is one major change since last year in terms of programming which is that the world competition section FLASH FORWARD will not be a competition section anymore. Instead, it will have an audience award. We will select about 30 films for this section and pick 10 or 12 to be audience award candidates. Also the qualification for the section has been changed. Unlike last year, it doesn‘t have to be a world or international premiere or first or second feature any more. Because of all this, it will be much easier for the Filmmakers to submit.

We obviously are compared with many festivals in Asia such as Shanghai or Tokyo, but I think we have more differences from them than similarities with them. Since the very beginning we have had firm goals to promote Asian and Korean cinema and discovering new talents in Asian filmmaking. We would like to be the place where you go to discover the future Asian filmmakers‘ works. We have pursued this goal for the past 15 years and we will continue for the future because that is what our festival is for. This is also why we have many projects and programs for young Asian talent to learn filmmaking, to share thoughts and visions of our cinema and to also connect with each other for future networking. This does not only mean we deal with Asian cinema and their filmmakers. We show films from all over the world and invite them to various events. Through our film market we encourage film sales agents and distribution companies and producers, no matter where they are from, to participate.

Like I said, we have various events for all the filmmakers including Q and As and individual press conferences, so as long as you are a filmmaker and you have a really good film, it doesn‘t matter where you are from – you will have a really, really good chance to be introduced here in Busan. You can be anyone – Busan festival is a place for everybody.
